Dark Spots - age spots, liver spots, freckles
Age Spots or Liver Spots (lentigines) and Freckles (ephelides) are brown or black spots that show up over time on sun exposed areas of the skin. These spots usually occur on the backs of the hand, face and legs. Prople who spend a great deal of time in the sun may also find these dark spots on the shoulders and back.
Age spots are superficial collections of skin pigment called melanin which, over time, have accumulated within the upper layer of the skin (epidermis). Freckles are more common in people who have lighter skin, and who sunburn easily. Age spots, on the other hand, occur in all skin types, and they usually appear later in life.
Are Age Spots dangerous?
Fortunately, age spots are harmless and really require no treatment unless they cause discomfort or if they take on an irregular appearance. If you have any concerns about your dark spots, you should see your dermatologist as soon as possible - since some dark spots could be skin cancer (melanoma).
How do I prevent Age Spots?
The only way to prevent age spots is to use liberal amounts of sunscreen before the age of 35. Avoid excessive sun exposure, and wear protective clothing.
Treatment for Age Spots:
For years, Hydroquinone topical preparations have been the most commonly used treatment for age spots and freckles. However, recent research indicates that hydroquinone may be carcinogenic (cancer causing). If fact, hydroquinone has been banned for sale in many countries.
Kojic Acid is another fairly effective compound for skin lightening. However, like hydroquinone, this compound, too, is being closely monitored for possible carcinogenic effects on the skin.
Retin A and Hydroxy Acid Peels do help to diminish dark spots - but these should only de done by a dermatologist or well trained aesthetician.
Liquid Nitrogen Freezing can remove dark spots but in many case this treatment can leave scars.
Laser Treatment is quite effective and it is less damaging to the skin but it is a very expensive way to remove age spots.
